What a pound actually costs, by grow method
Wholesale THCa flower has stratified into three clear tiers. Cultivation method is the single biggest driver of price — more than strain name, more than THCa percentage alone.
Sun-grown, light-dep, or machine-trimmed. This tier has compressed hard — down from roughly $800–1,200/lb in early 2024 as more cultivators entered the market and growing efficiency improved. Best fit for pre-rolls, shake, and extraction feedstock.
The workhorse tier for most retail shelves. Exotic or limited-run genetics can hit $900–$1,200/lb even at this grow level, while reliable strains with widely available seed stock sit closer to $500–$700/lb.
Climate control, supplemental lighting, and carbon filtration push overhead up before the grower earns a dollar. Flower testing above 25% total THCa consistently moves faster at retail than flower in the 15–20% range, and that potency premium is priced in.

Per-pound pricing drops fast once you move past single-pound orders. As a general guide across the market:

- GENETICSNaming and terpene profile move price as much as raw THCa percentage does — “exotic” strains command a premium independent of lab numbers.
- SEASONOutdoor harvest runs October through January. Buyers who place large orders in Q4 and lock multi-pound contracts typically hold pricing through spring.

Federal hemp compliance is shifting from a delta-9-only threshold to a total-THC standard on this date. That’s the framework THCa flower has operated under since the 2018 Farm Bill, so this is the most consequential regulatory change the category has seen.
